Customer Put gas in their diesel truck!?!?
Got a call recently for an Isuzu cab-over that wouldn’t start. Customer tells me they might’ve put gas in it.
Yeah… “might’ve.”
By the time I got there, that “maybe” had already turned into a full-blown fuel system failure.
What Happens When You Put Gas in a Diesel
Here’s the reality most people don’t understand:
Diesel fuel isn’t just fuel—it’s also what lubricates your entire high-pressure fuel system.
Gasoline?
It has zero lubrication.
So when gas gets into a diesel system, especially a modern high-pressure setup, this is what happens:
The injection pump starts grinding itself apart
Metal shavings get sent through the entire system
Injectors, rails, and lines all get contaminated
The damage spreads FAST
At that point, you’re not dealing with a small issue anymore—you’ve got contamination in the entire system.
And no, you’re not “just flushing it out.”
Once metal goes through it, it’s game over.
What I Found on This Truck
This Isuzu had:
No start condition
Low / no fuel pressure
Signs of contamination in the system
Once we started digging into it, it was clear:
The fuel system was compromised.
That means you’re not replacing one part—you’re dealing with everything the fuel touched.
What It Took to Fix It
Here’s what a proper repair looks like when gas wipes out a diesel system:
High-pressure injection pump
Injectors
Fuel rails and lines
Fuel filters
Tank drained and cleaned
Fresh diesel fuel
This isn’t a “band-aid fix.”
This is a full system reset.
Because if you skip anything, that leftover contamination will wipe out the new parts too—and now you’re doing the job twice.
The Cost Reality
This job came out to around $13,000.
And that’s not me being expensive—that’s the cost of doing it correctly.
This isn’t:
A quick fix
A cheap mistake
Something you can ignore
This is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make with a diesel.
Here’s the Part That Can Save You Thousands
If you EVER put gas in a diesel:
DO NOT START IT. DONT EVEN TURN THE KEY TO THE ON POSITION!
Not even “just to move it.”
Not even “just to see if it’ll run.”
Every second that engine runs, you’re spreading damage through the system.
Instead:
Leave it off
Get it towed
Have the system drained immediately
That decision alone can be the difference between a few hundred bucks… and five figures.
Final Thoughts
We’ve seen people turn a small mistake into a massive repair just by trying to “start it one more time.”
Don’t guess. Don’t gamble.
If something feels off with your truck, get it checked out the right way the first time.
That’s how you save money—and avoid situations like this one.
If you’re dealing with a no-start, contamination, or anything fuel-related, we handle diagnostics and repairs the right way—no guessing, no parts swapping, just real answers.
